Getting Started: How To Take Control Of Your Online Presence

So you just launched an amazing new website for your business. Congratulations! You’ve taken an important first step, but you may be wondering “How the heck am I going to manage this thing and use it to get more customers?”

Well, we’ve got you covered. This article will walk you through your initial steps after launching your website, how to manage your website, and how to take control of your online presence.

First Steps

The first thing you’ll want to do after your website goes live is make your business findable on Google. Here’s why…

  • Over 85% of people who look up the location of a business use Google Maps

Setting up a Google My Business account will improve your findability in Google, and setting up a Google Analytics account will allow you to track your progress and get insights to help you increase your website traffic.

How to set up Google My Business

Go to google.com/business and create an account. You will then need to verify your business (usually by PIN number of through physical mail to confirm your business is real).

While you’re waiting for verification to complete, you can go ahead and fill in more details about your business. Things like hours of operation, photos, attributes, etc.

Be sure to add several photos that highlight your products or services. Also pay close to attention to the “attributes” section and add as many that apply to your business as possible.

Once you’re done, it’s probably a good idea if you have a local business to do the same thing at Bing places for business, Yahoo local listings, and Apple Maps.

How to set up Google Analytics

Go to google.com/analytics and create an account by clicking “Start for free”. Then you’ll need to set up a property in your account to represent your website. 

Now you can track insights directly from your WordPress dashboard with the MonsterInsights plugin. Just add your property tracking ID and click “Connect MonsterInsights”. Then you can grant MonsterInsights access to your Google account and complete the connection.

Now you can view Google Analytics metrics by clicking “Insights” in your WordPress dashboard menu.

How To Manage Your WordPress Website

Once you’ve launched your website, there are just a few things we suggest you do to ensure that your site continues to run smoothly.

First, we recommend completing any available updates about once per week. This would include your theme, plugins, and WordPress itself.

Just go to your dashboard and click “Updates” to see what updates are available.

The other thing you’ll want to do if you consistently add to or edit your website is to clean out your WordPress database about once per month. 

You can do this with a plugin called WP-Sweep. Once the plugin is activated, you can click “Tools” in your dashboard menu then click “Sweep”. At the bottom of that page you can select “Sweep All”. However, make sure your site is backed up before you do this just in case anything goes wrong.

Now, in order to make edits to your WordPress website, we like to use a page builder called Elementor. It is a plugin that we install and activate on all ProDigital Pacific websites. 

All you have to do is click on the page you want to edit, or add a new page, then click “Edit With Elementor” and you’ll be able to use an extremely simple drag and drop platform with loads of customization options.

Optimize Your Online Presence

Now that your website is all set up and you have a Google My Business account, there are just a few more activities to keep in mind for optimizing your online presence.

First, be sure to add or claim your business on all relevant business listing sites, review sites, and social media. This will help potential customers find you online, and as more sites are mentioning and linking to your business, you will appear higher in Google search results.

Once all of your listings are claimed you can start encouraging satisfied customers to leave reviews online. You should monitor and respond to all reviews, positive or negative.  Try to personalize your responses to positive reviews, and if someone leaves a negative review, offer to make it right while putting a positive spin on it. 

For example… “Sorry this happened, John. I certainly understand your frustration. We are normally know for our exceptional attention to detail, and we regret that this didn’t happen in this case. I would like to help resolve this issue for you. My name is Sean, please give me a call at 555-555-5555 and I’d be happy to make it right.”

The last thing in addition to adding business listings and managing reviews is to do some content marketing and SEO. 

Adding a blog to your website is a great way to improve your SEO to rank higher in search engines. Write some blog articles with helpful and relevant information for your customers.

Also, figure out where your target audience likes to spend time on the internet and share the same information on those platforms. Find other ways to connect with your audience as well through humor, shared interests, etc. Having a blog in combination with a consistent social media strategy is a great way to use content to gain new customers.

And finally, see if you can get other websites related to your industry to link back to your website. For example, maybe someone else’s blog has an article where linking back to your homepage or one of your own blog articles could add value their article. You could reach out and let them know you’ve found a way to add value for their readers. This will add a new traffic stream for your website and will also greatly improve your SEO.
